Tarong Energy is committed to supporting research and development activities associated with reducing greenhouse gas emissions from coal fired generation.
We have developed a Greenhouse Policy and Strategy to guide our efforts in minimising our corporate greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through reducing the greenhouse intensity of our operations (refer to chart below).
We have established a Greenhouse Project Group to ensure the Greenhouse Strategy is implemented successfully. The Group draws on expertise from various disciplines across the organisation, including Finance, Business Development, Market and Trading, Operations and Communications.
To date, activities we have undertaken to support our aim include:
Offsetting emissions from our vehicle fleet through Greenfleet
Examining opportunities for a wider application of the Greenfleet to other operational offsets
Supporting our employees to participate in Greenfleet
Reviewing options for supplying biodiesel for vehicle fleet
Conducting assessments to determine if biodiesel can be adopted economically and technically as a flame stabilisation fuel for the TPS boilers
Suppling fly ash to the cement industry (every tonne of fly ash used as cement avoids the emission of 800 kilograms of carbon dioxide from cement manufacturing)
Partnering with CSIRO, fitting post-combustion capture (PCC) technology to Tarong Power Station in early 2010.
Partnering with MBD Energy, pledging to construct a one hectare algae-based carbon capture and recycling plant.
